INFORMATION FOR REFERRING VETS & OWNERS

PetVISION is a referral only veterinary ophthalmology service for dogs and cats. At PetVISION, your clients and their pets will only be consulted by Dr Guy Clare. It is only Dr Guy who then performs the operation on the animals entrusted to PetVISION. Ophthalmology is a discipline that is notorious for requiring prompt action for a pet to maximise the chances of saving an eye. Emergency eye problems are prioritised and will be seen during the normal working week (even when fully booked).

We greatly appreciate a Vet's referral and will do our utmost to achieve the best possible outcome. We will keep referring vets and owners updated at each stage of the referral from working diagnosis to 'sign off'. Research shows that written information is a far more reliable method of communication when compared to verbal information. We will therefore keep everyone informed via email or text.

  2. Second find the Surgery Base Price: Different procedures are put into the different $ Grades

  3. The Total price is found by adding the Base Price to the $ Weight Factor. This includes all fees associated with anaesthesia; disposable items; surgical time; theatre time and suture material. Together with hospitalisation the day of surgery (until 6.30pm). Discharge later the same day

  4. Where the 'same' surgery is required at 2 eyes, the cost is generally 1.5x the cost for one eye

Our Services

  • A working diagnosis is established after the ophthalmic examination. This may include: indirect ophthalmoscopy; direct ophthalmoscopy; slit lamp examination and ancillary testing i.e. Schimer Tear Test (STT), intra-ocular pressure (IOP) measurement and fluorescein staining. Where appropriate gonioscopy, ultrasonography and advanced imaging studies (CT / MRI) can be employed

  • Surgical Procedures relating to the ocular adnexa (the structures associated with the globe that contribute to the pet's eye e.g. the lids, third eyelid and orbital contents); the external eye (cornea and sclera) and the internal eye (lens). The following is a guide of the more commonly performed procedures:

    1. Adnexal procedures not associated with the eyelids: cherry eye; retrobulbar infection; treatment for scrolled third eyelid cartilage; third eyelid tumour resection and reconstruction using an autologous ear cartilage graft

    2. Adnexal procedures associated with the eyelids: browsling surgery; Stades procedure; entropion; distichiasis; ectopic cilia; medial canthoplasty; correction of eyelid agenesis; tumour resection and lid reconstruction

    3. External eye: superficial (indolent / non-healing / SCCED / Boxer) ulcer treatment; stromal ulcer treatment with conjunctival pedicle graft (CPG) or corneo-conjunctival transposition (CCT); feline sequestrum treatment; dermoid resection; stromal keratectomy in the management of corneal calcification; thermal keratoplasty for corneal endothelial degeneration; tumour resection at the globe and third eyelid and reconstruction with an autologous ear cartilage graft

    4. Cataract surgery: phacoemulsification and insertion of an intra-oclar lens (IOL) wherever possible and anterior lens luxation removal

    5. Eye removal (enucleation / ablation) is performed to relieve eye pain. Typically the procedure takes around 10mins surgical time with Dr Guy. An incision is made around the lids, the globe is removed and then the lids are sutured to 'seal' the wound. A bandage 'stent' is sutured in place over the wound to place controlled 'pressure' along the incision line. This is removed, usually after 1-3 days. Due to the speed of this surgery it is often performed in older 'at risk' patients to relieve uncontrollable pain. This can give an older pet a new lease of life and the risk/reward will be discussed prior to it's undertaking

    6. Evisceration with insertion of an intra-scleral silicone prosthesis can be considered as an alternative to eye removal in certain situations. It's important to realise that the outer 'shell' of the eye is still 'alive' and can lead to problems e.g. ulceration. For some people who understand the pros and cons of the procedure it can be a good option. The procedure typically takes nearer half an hour and so isn't appropriate, in my opinion, for aged patients due to the increased length of the anaesthetic compared to eye removal
